98.7 Kiss FM New York presents Shep Pettibones Mastermixes

Out here in the vast expanses of the blogosphere, as adults like to call it, you can find remix upon remix upon remix of just about every dance song popular right now. And why not? It's pretty damn easy to make one these days given the availability of the software and how quickly you can propagate your remix. But way back in the early 80's and beyond, there was no such thing as remixes. Until men like Shep Pettibone came along and changed all that. Sure, Hip Hop started the wheels in motion by rapping over popular disco songs throughout the 70's. But Shep Pettibone was one of the first to begin re-mixing songs for disco purposes.

Enter 98.7 Kiss FM New York and Prelude records and you have Shep's remixes on wax. Mastermixes is the record in question and it was copped by Nandy way back in 1982 (I assume). It's a solid 2 record set with a good mix of disco and funk. These are some of the best tracks:

Midnight Star - No Parking On The Dancefloor

Vocoder music has made a comeback of sorts lately. T-Pain started the comeback, then Snoop did "Sexual Eruption" and now everyone is in on it. I did no research on that history of modern vocoder-laced music, so feel free to refute that comment in the comments section. Either way, I'm sure everyone in on the vocoder game had a Midnight Star record within reach when they were just a lower-case g. It went double-platinum and continues to kick ass and take names today. Check it out.

Also, some news: I just got a new computer after 4 months of trying to keep this blog alive without one. The posts I was able to get up were done from a laptop I borrowed from the library. This is why posts were getting a lot less regular and I was not uploading my own pictures etc. But I now have a computer and I am in the process of recovering all the music I lost due to a lightning strike/my backup hard drive being corrupted. I lost all my vinyl rips so everything I'm putting up for the next few months will be brand new rips. That doesn't really effect the programming here, but I just hope it gives everyone an idea of what's going on if I go a long time without posting.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

As promised, here is your Halloween goody bag of not-so-rare-but-pretty-good-alternative-Halloween-music. I kind of broke the rules a little because the only record from the thrift store in this bunch is the Alice Cooper track. The Duran Duran record is from some punk clothing store here in Orlando (Static), that happened to have a second-hand records section. The Yello record is from a second-hand record store in Tallahassee.

And that closes out Halloween programing for me this year. It was pretty hard to find enough appropriate records so I don't know if I will do it next year. But either way, I love Halloween and I'm glad I can share some good Halloween music.

Regular programing resumes in November. Way more Nandy on the way among many other things.

Skinny Puppy - Stairs and Flowers 12"

Skinny Puppy has long been one of my favorite bands. That being said, "Stairs and Flowers" is probably my least favorite single from them. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but not as much as other Puppy material. The remixes that appear on the 12" don't compare to the original either. They are okay but not great. There is one particular sample that gets annoying after awhile.

But that's not to say this single isn't good. The remix of "Assimilate" is very good. Pretty true to the original but sped-up, louder and more violent. The synths are pretty rich and the bass is pretty hard hitting.

"Chainsaw" is excellent too. It also appears on many other discs in this version but I'm still glad they included it here. It's probably one of my favorite Puppy songs, especially around Halloween.

The Damned - Street of Dreams + Shadow of Love

Halloween is a pretty big deal here at the offices of Found Vinyl. Horror movies are a nightly affair and the candy corn flows like bats from a belfry. So I figured, why not some Halloween-esque updates for October? So the programming around here for the next month will be a little different.

This weeks update is from a band that rode the crest of the Punk wave all the way to the shores of the Goth/Post-Punk movemnet: The Damned. This record by the Damned, Phantasmagoria, feels like the first chill of fall: refreshing and kind of moody without being overwhelmingly depressing. The B-Side of the disc is far more upbeat but still maintains a pretty candlelit like atmosphere.

Of course, I found this one at my favorite record store, the Goodwill on Michigan in Orlando, Fl. I found this one right around the time I was thinking about starting this blog so you could almost say it's one of the records that inspired me to start Found Vinyl.

Echo and the Bunnymen - Bring On The Dancing Horses

I've been pretty lazy lately; Not much thrifting and even less desire to borrow a computer to post with. So rather post something that I think most people who read this blog haven't heard, I'm going to post something that most people who read this blog probably have heard. Why? Well, because I've been a long time fan of Echo and the Bunnymen, since I was a frail goth kid in high school so there's that. But also because this is just a really pleasant song. I love disco, soul and the cheesier side of new-wave a lot, which is why that is the majority of the stuff that ends up here. But the roots of my musical taste reside in the realm of goth, post-punk and the more serious side of new-wave. So this week, I'm going to go back to my roots, as I did in the Xymox post and post something that helped shape my taste. And like always this record is from a thrift store so I'm not just posting something off my iPod.

Time Bandits - Live it Up

Ok, so it's time to come clean about the lack of posts lately. I don't really like to talk about personal hardships, but my computer got struck by lightning about 3 weeks ago. I've been trying to post when I can get a hold of a computer so it might be like this for a bit until I can get a hold of a permanent computer. But I do promise to update at least once a week every week so don't be a stranger to the site.

I couldn't get an image for this one or scan it in because this laptop isn't cooperating with my scanner but the cover isn't really what it's all about anyway. Standard Nandy markings throughout: an ND written on a yellow sticker on the cover and a big asterisk on the b-side label. Music-wise it's a little bit of everything that Nandy and I dig: disco, funk and new-wave. Enjoy.

Nandy had two copies of this one at the thrift store but I only took one. I think the other is still there if you guys are looking to get a piece of the Nandy collection (also there is a copy of the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack that Nandy donated that I haven't been able to get a hold of so I think that is floating around in the world too).

But I digress. If you dig these tracks, make it out to the show on Wednesday. It's free for 21 and up so what do you have to lose?

I decided to forgo Nandy day in favor of a song that celebrates the greatness that is the great U.S OF A. And who better to provide such a song than the greatest Neue Deutsche Welle artist ever, Falco?

Heaven 17 - Play To Win + Proof Nandy is from New York City as predicted

I'm also assuming that Nandy is from New York, because three of the records from the collection are compilations produced by New York radio stations.

Well, I was right. I took a closer inspection of Nandy's copy of Heaven 17's single "Play To Win" and found half peeled-off pricing sticker with the word "Bondy's" barely exposed at the top. So, I thought that I could finally pin down whether or not she was from New York by doing a simple Google search and sure enough, the fourth search result for "Bondy's" gave me an address in New York City. Here's the map.

I figure this would be as good a time as any to compile what I know about Nandy so far and maybe speculate about who she might be. First of all I now know that she lived in New York. I also know that she lived in NYC at least from 1982 to 1987 because I have three compilations from New York radio stations that wouldn't be available in stores for long, so they couldn't have been acquired anytime much later than that. I would speculate that she lived in NYC sometime before '82 though, because of the era these records span. I would guess from about 1976 to 1992, but that can't be proven.

Also, I have a pretty healthy stack of Spanish language records all baring Nandy's name. I have guessed that she was of Latino decent early on and I still maintain that guess. But, I am not completely sold on that notion yet.

Finally, and most importantly, I know that Nandy is a slave for extended dance mixes. If a record has an extended mix, it's circled or starred. Always. That's not to say she doesn't dig the single cut, but she loves an extended mix.

Hopefully more can be revealed about Nandy in the future. I still haven't figured out why she draws a giant capital I with black magic marker on some records. I'm guessing she is pointing out the tracks that she digs but it just seems like an odd choice of symbol.

But I digress. So without further ado, here is the record that proved without a doubt where some, if not all, of these records came from: Heaven 17's "Play To Win".

Exposé - Point of No Return (12" Extended Mix)

In celebration of tonight's performance at the Parliament House here in Orlando, Nandy brings us the extended mix of "Point of No Return". Unfortunately, I won't be attending the show because it's $30 bucks a pop. Which is interesting because if Exposé were playing on any other weekend other than Gay Days, the show would probably be free at a city park or something. But to quote Kurtis Blow, these are the breaks, my friends.

The Cut - Kindness for Weakness

Really no idea what year this is from as the record label says nothing of a year and I can't find any information about The Cut online. Cut is a pretty common verb so if AMG doesn't have any info, no one does. What makes the research even tougher is the fact that there is another song of the same title by a group called Soul Children (great song by the way). But if my wagering is any good I'd go ahead and say nineteen eighty.....three? Take your guesses to the comment section if you wish.

By any measure, the track is pretty good. I'm sure by now 'yall know I'm a slave for analog synth and soulfull lyrics and this record has them both in spades.
