98.7 Kiss FM New York presents Shep Pettibones Mastermixes

Out here in the vast expanses of the blogosphere, as adults like to call it, you can find remix upon remix upon remix of just about every dance song popular right now. And why not? It's pretty damn easy to make one these days given the availability of the software and how quickly you can propagate your remix. But way back in the early 80's and beyond, there was no such thing as remixes. Until men like Shep Pettibone came along and changed all that. Sure, Hip Hop started the wheels in motion by rapping over popular disco songs throughout the 70's. But Shep Pettibone was one of the first to begin re-mixing songs for disco purposes.

Enter 98.7 Kiss FM New York and Prelude records and you have Shep's remixes on wax. Mastermixes is the record in question and it was copped by Nandy way back in 1982 (I assume). It's a solid 2 record set with a good mix of disco and funk. These are some of the best tracks:

Time Bandits - Live it Up

Ok, so it's time to come clean about the lack of posts lately. I don't really like to talk about personal hardships, but my computer got struck by lightning about 3 weeks ago. I've been trying to post when I can get a hold of a computer so it might be like this for a bit until I can get a hold of a permanent computer. But I do promise to update at least once a week every week so don't be a stranger to the site.

I couldn't get an image for this one or scan it in because this laptop isn't cooperating with my scanner but the cover isn't really what it's all about anyway. Standard Nandy markings throughout: an ND written on a yellow sticker on the cover and a big asterisk on the b-side label. Music-wise it's a little bit of everything that Nandy and I dig: disco, funk and new-wave. Enjoy.

Sa-Fire - Boy, I've Been Told

In anticipation of Sa-Fire's performance at Club Tabu this Wednesday, July 16th, I'm here with a couple of cuts off of her 12" single "Boy, I've Been Told". Nandy had two copies of this one at the thrift store but I only took one. I think the other is still there if you guys are looking to get a piece of the Nandy collection (also there is a copy of the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack that Nandy donated that I haven't been able to get a hold of so I think that is floating around in the world too).

But I digress. If you dig these tracks, make it out to the show on Wednesday. It's free for 21 and up so what do you have to lose?

Heaven 17 - Play To Win + Proof Nandy is from New York City as predicted

I'm also assuming that Nandy is from New York, because three of the records from the collection are compilations produced by New York radio stations.

Well, I was right. I took a closer inspection of Nandy's copy of Heaven 17's single "Play To Win" and found half peeled-off pricing sticker with the word "Bondy's" barely exposed at the top. So, I thought that I could finally pin down whether or not she was from New York by doing a simple Google search and sure enough, the fourth search result for "Bondy's" gave me an address in New York City. Here's the map.

I figure this would be as good a time as any to compile what I know about Nandy so far and maybe speculate about who she might be. First of all I now know that she lived in New York. I also know that she lived in NYC at least from 1982 to 1987 because I have three compilations from New York radio stations that wouldn't be available in stores for long, so they couldn't have been acquired anytime much later than that. I would speculate that she lived in NYC sometime before '82 though, because of the era these records span. I would guess from about 1976 to 1992, but that can't be proven.

Also, I have a pretty healthy stack of Spanish language records all baring Nandy's name. I have guessed that she was of Latino decent early on and I still maintain that guess. But, I am not completely sold on that notion yet.

Finally, and most importantly, I know that Nandy is a slave for extended dance mixes. If a record has an extended mix, it's circled or starred. Always. That's not to say she doesn't dig the single cut, but she loves an extended mix.

Hopefully more can be revealed about Nandy in the future. I still haven't figured out why she draws a giant capital I with black magic marker on some records. I'm guessing she is pointing out the tracks that she digs but it just seems like an odd choice of symbol.

But I digress. So without further ado, here is the record that proved without a doubt where some, if not all, of these records came from: Heaven 17's "Play To Win".

In celebration of tonight's performance at the Parliament House here in Orlando, Nandy brings us the extended mix of "Point of No Return". Unfortunately, I won't be attending the show because it's $30 bucks a pop. Which is interesting because if Exposé were playing on any other weekend other than Gay Days, the show would probably be free at a city park or something. But to quote Kurtis Blow, these are the breaks, my friends.

ONE WEEK ONLY: Discocross N.2 unabridged

This week Nandy provides Foundvinyl with it's first DJ mix. The record was produced in Italy and mixed by some Italian guys I never heard of (Chisura, Baldelli, Brandi). All of the notes are in Italian and it's on an Italian label, but like all other Italo disco, none of the songs are in Italian. Discocross clocks in at about 40 minutes with each side or lato clocking it at 20 minutes. Lato B is the superior side but the first 2 tracks and the last track on Lato A are incredible.

Because it's a mix I decided to throw the whole record on here uncut. It's only going to be up for a week though because it's a pretty huge file, so get it while you can.

Nandy didn't leave too many clues this time. No circled, starred, or crossed out songs on this one; just the Nandy label on the front and the letters "R" and "I" real big on the b-side written in black permanent marker. Suffice to say because there weren't any circled tracks, I ignored this record until I listened to it this week. Though it drags on a little long, I thought it was too good to sit on. So I moved it up to this week.

Santa Esmeralda - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

In an effort to post more often, I'm making Friday "Nandy Day". Which means every Friday comes with more Nandy love. And love comes in no short amount this Friday; or lust for that matter. This week, a Quentin Tarantino favorite, Santa Esmeralda's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". A Latin/Disco, cover of a cover, and an epic one at that. This one clocks in at about 15 minutes, basically the entire first side of the record, so I edited it down to a shorter version. But I left the long one for your extended listening pleasure.

Nandy circled the entire first side and and "You're My Everything" on the second. This one has seen it's better days as the ends of the sleeve are frayed, leaving part of the record exposed.

Bonus: Brothers Johnson - You Make Me Wanna Wiggle

The Brothers Johnson - Stomp!

The Brothers Johnson have had a sort of revival since last year when Justice sampled their track "You Make Me Wanna Wiggle" for Justice's debut album. And not too soon either. The Brothers Johnson are one of the great American funk bands. And they don't do too bad with disco either. "Stomp!" is one of their biggest hits, good enough for Nandy to break out the felt pen and circle it on the label. She also circled "Light Up The Night" and "This Had To Be". It's also worth noting the delightfully tacky cover art too. One of the best record covers I've seen.

An exciting new series on Foundvinyl, The Nandy Collection

Last Sunday, while going on my regular parade of the thrift stores here in Orlando, I came across a collection of about 18 various funk, R&B, soul, disco and new wave records all from the same collection. All the records are labeled with the same name, Nandy, written in permanent marker on white tape stuck to the record labels. I have no idea who Nandy is: whether he/she/it is a man or a women, casual music lover or DJ, whether NANDY is some sort of acronym or even if Nandy is alive or dead. The only clues I have are the markings that Nandy has left for me on each record; and Nandy left plenty.

So far, my idea is that Nandy is a woman, because her level of organization is something usually reserved for a female. For example, Nandy has circled all of her favorite songs on each record and crosses out songs she dislikes. Sometimes Nandy will even circle/cross out an entire side. This could also count towards the argument that Nandy was a DJ because it would be easier to determine what songs to play but DJ's don't usually preform with full albums and most of the collection consists of full albums.

I'm also assuming that Nandy is from New York, because three of the records from the collection are compilations produced by New York radio stations. The newest of which is from 1987, so I'm assuming she lived there around that time. Where she lived before and after, who knows?

But this is all speculation. The greatest thing Nandy left for me was the great condition she left her records in. All the records are wonderful: fun, soulful and mostly classics. But unfortunately, they are mostly forgotten classics. Which is why this week and for the next year or so, I will post at least one Nandy record a month. I'll give details on the quirks of each record so you can also kind of speculate who Nandy might be. You will know when I am featuring a Nandy record when you see the Nandy collection banner at the head of the post.

Edit: Well, what can I say? I've pretty much inherited a good chunk of Nandy's total music collection. I went back to Goodwill yesterday and there was another big load of Nandy records waiting for me. I bought them all which totals my Nandy records to 39. I'll keep going back until they stop putting them out I guess.

So, from now on, you can pretty much consider Nandy a regular contributor on Foundvinyl. I kind of feel silly for making so much fanfare about the collection now that I've got almost 40 records from her but oh well I guess. You'll be seeing that new snazzy Nandy banner a whole lot on here.
