Skinny Puppy - Stairs and Flowers 12"

Skinny Puppy has long been one of my favorite bands. That being said, "Stairs and Flowers" is probably my least favorite single from them. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but not as much as other Puppy material. The remixes that appear on the 12" don't compare to the original either. They are okay but not great. There is one particular sample that gets annoying after awhile.

But that's not to say this single isn't good. The remix of "Assimilate" is very good. Pretty true to the original but sped-up, louder and more violent. The synths are pretty rich and the bass is pretty hard hitting.

"Chainsaw" is excellent too. It also appears on many other discs in this version but I'm still glad they included it here. It's probably one of my favorite Puppy songs, especially around Halloween.

The Damned - Street of Dreams + Shadow of Love

Halloween is a pretty big deal here at the offices of Found Vinyl. Horror movies are a nightly affair and the candy corn flows like bats from a belfry. So I figured, why not some Halloween-esque updates for October? So the programming around here for the next month will be a little different.

This weeks update is from a band that rode the crest of the Punk wave all the way to the shores of the Goth/Post-Punk movemnet: The Damned. This record by the Damned, Phantasmagoria, feels like the first chill of fall: refreshing and kind of moody without being overwhelmingly depressing. The B-Side of the disc is far more upbeat but still maintains a pretty candlelit like atmosphere.

Of course, I found this one at my favorite record store, the Goodwill on Michigan in Orlando, Fl. I found this one right around the time I was thinking about starting this blog so you could almost say it's one of the records that inspired me to start Found Vinyl.

WORN COPY: Pink Floyd - Echoes

Rick Wright, the keyboardist and vocalist from Pink Floyd died this week of cancer. He was often overshadowed by the likes of Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and David Gilmour but Wright was far more influential to the Pink Floyd sound than most gave him credit for. He wrote a handfull of songs in the Pink Floyd cannon like "Great Gig in the Sky" and "Us and Them" from Dark Side of the Moon. He also sang vocals on "Time" and "Astronomy Domine", among others.

One of the best pieces he contributed to was "Echoes" off of Meddle. "Echoes" pre-dates Dark Side of the Moon and helped establish the new post-Barrett sound of Pink Floyd. He helped write "Echoes" and sings vocals on it.

Be aware that this record has seen better days. Sometimes it skips around which is annoying but the sound is still pretty rich for what it's worth.

R.I.P. Mr. Wright. See you on the Dark Side of the Moon.

Simple Minds: you might know them from the Breakfast Club soundtrack, you might not. I know them as the band that, in my eyes, is everything U2 wants to be. Just solid work throughout without all that messiah status that Bono constantly tries to posture himself into. All of the tracks below are from the only Simple Minds record I have on vinyl, Sparkle in the Rain. I found Sparkle in the Rain on the same day I inherited the Nandy Collection. Alas, this is not a Nandy but it was the icing on the cake on a very good day for thrifting.

Meco - Star Wars and Other Galatic Funk

In anticipation for the new Star Wars film that will most likely suck, we take a trip back to 1977 when Star Wars was awesome and people made 15 minute long disco songs based on it. This is a rip of the entire first side, the track list is below.

Everything about this record is a trip. Obviously the music is awesome but the cover does wonders too. You gotta love the two pretty run-of-the-mill 70's astronauts bumping asses, presumably on the roof of some anonymous utopian metropolis. The liner notes are pretty funny too. It lists all the musicians from the "CorMar Galaxy" including the "Clomatron" player. The thank you messege from Meco is pretty tongue-in-cheek as well.

Echo and the Bunnymen - Bring On The Dancing Horses

I've been pretty lazy lately; Not much thrifting and even less desire to borrow a computer to post with. So rather post something that I think most people who read this blog haven't heard, I'm going to post something that most people who read this blog probably have heard. Why? Well, because I've been a long time fan of Echo and the Bunnymen, since I was a frail goth kid in high school so there's that. But also because this is just a really pleasant song. I love disco, soul and the cheesier side of new-wave a lot, which is why that is the majority of the stuff that ends up here. But the roots of my musical taste reside in the realm of goth, post-punk and the more serious side of new-wave. So this week, I'm going to go back to my roots, as I did in the Xymox post and post something that helped shape my taste. And like always this record is from a thrift store so I'm not just posting something off my iPod.
